英文摘要From June to September of 1981, the heavy rainfall repeatdly fell in the vast mountainous regions of Sichuan prov. , thus causing the debris flows. Such extensive distributions, high frequency, large scales and seriusous damages of debris flows are exceptional in history. The affected fifity counties in Sichuan prov. There are 1060 debris gullies in total, in which the debris flow of Lizhiyida in Ganlo lasted about an hour. Its max. velocity was 10m/s and the discharge was up to 2000 m^3/s. The soild materials which were brought out total up a few 100 thousand cubic metres. The railway bridge was destroyed and the train was overturned, and so traffic was held up for half of a month. The losses was over ten million yuan.
The debris flows of 1981 in Sichuan were caused by the heavy rainfall. In case of strong folds, developing rifts (especially the mobile rifts), active earthquakes, slacking rock and abundant losse matericals, in the mountainous region with high peaks and deep valleys, steep slopes and torrents, and less vegetations, the debris would occur while the rainfall was 50 mm/day or 10 mm/10 min. The debris flows densely distributed in the centre of heavy rainfall area.
