A new method for positioning Variable Message Signs

英文摘要In order to distribute Variable Message Signs (VMS) in urban areas properly, based on actual guidance effect maximization, a new method for positioning the VMS is proposed. This method makes improvements in the original layout optimization model. Through the analysis of the complex components of VMS guidance effects, this method introduces repeated VMS traffic flow guidance effect and wasted VMS traffic flow guidance effect. This method also defines guidance coverage rate and guidance effect loss rate. At last, the greedy algorithm was used to solve the VMS layout optimization function. Through a road network example of 15 nodes, the model is proved to be simple and efficient. When seven VMS are collocated in the net, the guidance coverage rate is 0.75, and the guidance effect loss rate reaches 0.04; in Mei model 1, the guidance coverage rate is 0.56, and the guidance effect loss rate reaches 0.22; so it is an optimal configuration. Hence, it is more suitable for the needs of actual traffic flow guidance.
