英文摘要	An optical transmitter in a TPON (telecommunications over passive optical networks) network includes a servo circuit 41 for controlling the peak optical output power of pulses produced by laser 22. An optical sensor 23 is coupled optically to the laser 22 and provides a monitoring signal MONITOR indicative of the average optical power of the pulses. The servo circuit receives a digital demand signal DEMAND representing an intended peak power of the pulses, and produces from this and the data signal a modified demand signal MODDEM equal to the product of the duty cycle of the laser and the demand signal DEMAND. The servo circuit then adjusts the drive signals DRIVE applied to the laser 22 so as to maintain the monitoring signal MONITOR at or close to the modified demand signal MODDEM. Such a transmitter can provide effective peak power control, even when the average duty cycle of the modulating data signal is low, without requiring a fast sensor and fast associated circuitry.
