‘Greener’ Ionic Liquids: Synthesis, Antimicrobial Activity and Applications in Hydrogenation Reactions

中文摘要Ionic liquids have shown large potential in industrial processes where usually they have been regarded as a green alternative to conventional solvents. However toxicity screening of the second generation of ionic liquids, based on imidazolium or pyridinium cations, is paramount. One of ionic liquids’ prominent properties comparing with conventional solvent is their tunability, which provide a great opportunity to tune their properties through adjusting the cation and anion’s structure. In our laboratory, a series of imidazolium ionic liquids were prepared starting from sustainable feedstocks and screened against 7 bacterial strains. The incorporation of hydroxyls, ester and amide groups into side-chain significantly reduced their toxicity compared with alkyl side-chain. Further applications of obtained ionic liquids in asymmetric hydrogenation also has been investigated. It was found that the “greener’ ionic liquids can replace the conventional solvents, and high ee and yields were obtained in 1 hour with specific ionic liquids in asymmetric hydrogenation reactions. The structure of side-chain of ionic liquids can affect the yields and stereoselectivity of reaction, however, the application of chiral ionic liquids do not affect the stereoselectivity in this study.
