中文摘要feedstock supply presents the major hurdle for large-volume biodiesel industry, because triacylglycerides (tag) productivity by oil plants is quite limited. it is pivotal to develop non-conventional tag production method. lipid fermentation using oleaginous microorganisms can be an alternative, as these microbes are able to assimilate carbohydrates derived from lignocellulosic biomass [1]. for example, rhodosporidium toruloides y4 were found to accumulate large quantity of intracellular lipids with very high cell density [2]. moreover, microbial lipids closely resemble vegetable oils in that they are composed of c16 and c18 series long-chain fatty acids [3]. however, biomass hydrolysis produces monosaccharides along with toxic by-products [4]. this work investigated the effects of these inhibitors on lipid fermentation by r. toruloides y4. our data showed that acetic acid, hydroxylmethylfurfural and syringaldehyde had slightly inhibitory effects; vanillin and p-hydroxybenzaldehyde were toxic at concentration over 10 and 12 mm, respectively; and that furfural gave the most toxic effect. cell growth was inhibited by about 50% in the presence of 1 mm furfural. furthermore, furfuryl alcohol and furoic acid showed similar inhibitory effects. compositional analysis confirmed that the majority were c16 and c18 series long-chain fatty acids, suggesting that those inhibitors had little effects on the biosynthetic pathways for lipids.
