中文摘要 | the fundamental challenge in establishing hydrogen as the future energy is the clean, renewable, and environmentally friendly generation of large quantities of hydrogen gas. in this context, unicellular green algae have come to the focal point of r&d in producing hydrogen as energy source because large quantities of hydrogen can be potentially generated from sun¬light and water. incontrasttothewidelyusedfreshwatergreenalgae,thegoal of our research is to develop a marine green algae-based, cost-effective system for sustained h2 photoproduction system, by utilizing seawater as the substrate and solar light as the source of energy. our research focuses on metabolic analysis, regulation and linking of hydrogen metabolism and their related path¬ways (guan et al., 2004a,b); rational optimization and redesign of hydrogen metabolism (guan et al., 2004a,b); and design, optimization and scale-up of bioreactors and bioprocesses for hydrogen production (zhang et al., 2005). to understand hydrogen metabolism and their regulation, we used a number of approaches including analysis of green algae strains that exhibit distinct hydrogen metabolic characteristics (guan et al., 2004a,b); using metabolic inducers and inhibitors toprobethelimiting/keystepsinvolvedinhydrogenmetabolism (guanetal.,2004a,b);usingsystemanalysisapproachtolinkall the steps involved in hydrogen production to identify the inter¬actions and interplay (zhang et al., 2005); and characterization of hydrogen metabolism across culture, cellular and molecular levels (ran et al., 2006a,b). this presentation will report key outcomes from our research program and discuss the future potentials and challenges in this exciting area of r&d. |
