中文摘要In a recently published paper [1] Offerman et al. conducted an in-situ observation of ferrite nucleation and growth kinetics during continuous cooling of a Fe-0.21%C-0.51%Mn-0.20%Si steel, using three-dimensional X-ray diffraction (3DXRD) microscopy. They concluded that the work for critical nucleus formation and the cube of the ferrite/austenite interfacial energy were orders of magnitude smaller than predicted by previous models. These results are reanalyzed in terms of rate-controlling diffusivity and nucleation sites (grain boundary faces, edges and corners), for example, using the pillbox critical nucleus model [2-4]. This analysis shows that earlier derived nucleus/matrix interfacial energies account reasonably well for the number of observed ferrite nuclei and very narrow undercoolings at which ferrite nucleation was discerned with the 3DXRD technique, assuming that a major proportion of ferrite particles are nucleated at grain corners.
